CAFI-What happened in Paris? Outcomes of the 13th Executive Board meeting
CAFI’s 13th Executive Board meeting took place July 9-10 2019 at the headquarters of the French Development Agency (AFD) in Paris.
All seven CAFI donors (Norway, France, the European Commission, Germany, the UK, Netherlands and South Korea) were in attendance, and joined for country-specific sessions by three partner countries (Gabon, Republic of Congo, DRC).
In a clear demonstration of the trust that donors have in the Initiative, a major decision was made to extend the lifetime of the CAFI Fund until 2027.
To assist the government of Gabon in the implementation of a national-scale forestry certification program and with accessing results-based funding for emission reductions, the Executive Board also decided to launch a call for expression of interest for a total of 12 M USD (Decision). Gabon and CAFI signed in July 2017 a Letter of intent to elaborate a national land use plan, a national system for monitoring of natural resources and forests and to strengthen forest governance. Gabon's forests cover 88% of its national territory.
The meeting was also an opportunity to take stock, with the Republic of Congo, of the negotiations on a Letter of Intent, a process initiated duringthe 12th Exceutive Board in April 2019. Discussions included on a cap for the non-conversion of land, in line with the country’s commitments in the Brazzaville Declaration, to conserve and protect peatlands and prevent them from drainage and degradation.
