MEPs vote in favour of Own Initiative Report on Palm Oil and Deforestation of Rainforests

The world’s forests are still being destroyed to make way for industrial-scale agriculture despite many companies pledging to eliminate deforestation from supply chains for products, such as palm oil, timber, cocoa and rubber. A new Fern survey, Promises and challenges: How companies are meeting commitments to end deforestation, takes the innovative step of interviewing senior executives to understand obstacles confronting those companies.

Finnish LULUCF proposal proves contentious

Experts and NGOs have challenged Finland’s blunt, controversial proposal that would allow countries to ignore carbon dioxide emissions from increased wood harvesting, thereby undermining the Commission’s original LULUCF proposal issued in July 2016.

TRAFFIC: European Union suspends the re-export of raw ivory

Brussels, Belgium, 17th May 2017—The European Commission has published a guidance document under which the European Union (EU) will suspend re-exports of raw ivory from 1 July 2017, even if they qualify as old/“pre-Convention” specimens as well as recommending tougher scrutiny of worked ivory movements.
