PPECF (COMIFAC-KFW) - RERAC: Involvement of the Sub-regional network of community radio stations in the program to foster certified logging in the Congo Basin.
Community radio stations as community support tools and agents of change at local level, are an important vehicle for advocacy, education, information and even capitalization of actions for the benefit of communities as well as other local actors.
As an appropriate response to the boycott of tropical timber by foreign markets and equally an adequate measure for sustainable and rational forest resource management, forest certification has gradually taken root in Congo Basin forests. Despite some noted progress, the rise of certified logging continues to be hampered by many obstacles, including the absence of a strong framework for communication and information sharing between various stakeholders, hence their lack of enthusiasm and even the numerous concerns they express.
The Project for the contribution of the “Sub-regional network of community radio stations in the program to foster the certified logging in the Congo Basin” is an intervention which aims to reverse this trend by implementing actions geared towards enhancing the knowledge of various players in the timber certification sector and of those involved in sustainable forest resource management as well as building a multi-stakeholder platform for more effective sharing of available information and equally to provide a conducive framework for constructive debates. The target is to help establish an appropriate medium for increased certified logging in three Congo Basin countries: Cameroon, DRC and CAR. A number of activities are lined up in this regard: a capacity building workshop for community radio journalists on sustainable management and certified logging of forests, production of a communication manual on certification designed for local and community media, production of thematic radio programs and a radio film aimed awareness raising and disseminating information, organizing community events and discussion fora at local and national level.
