IITA: Biological product "Aflasafe” to reduce aflatoxin levels in groundnuts and corn
Dakar (Senegal), 22 March 2017 - Aflatoxins have significant impacts on health, agriculture and trade in Africa. They are one of the vectors responsible for liver cancer in thousands of victims every year around the world, with Africa bearing the brunt with a rate of 30%, especially in groundnut, corn and rice producing countries among others.
The objective of the aflasafe SN01 official launch was first of all to introduce it to the general public, and then identify local partners who are prepared to produce and market it, and most importantly educate farmers on the product’s efficiency. The launch is part of the Aflasafe Technology Transfer and Marketing (ATTC) Project which is being implemented by the IITA in 11 African countries, through its Business Incubation Platform (BIP), and aims to help improve food safety in Africa using Aflasafe®. Senegal is part of the first group of beneficiary countries of the project.
