A Historic Moment: The Sangha River Tri-national Protected Area (STN) becomes a World Heritage – a major victory for Congo Basin and their partners
1st July 2012 at St Petersburg, the 36th session of the World Heritage Committee registered the Sangha River Tri-national Protected Area (STN) on the list of World Heritage Sites.
This registration is the apex of a vision which dates back to the year 2000 when the governments of Cameroon, the Central African Republic and the Republic of Congo committed themselves through the Sangha Tri-national cooperation agreement to jointly manage this cross-border forest ecosystem.
STN protection and management perspectives are positive as this landscape benefits from the long term technical assistance of WWF and WCS; a lasting funding mechanism through the Sangha Tri-national Foundation secures sustainable financial supports for the achievement of the conservation and social and economic development objectives of this landscape.
