Job Summary

In this role, you will coordinate WRI’s contribution to the DRC's policy on integrated management of forest ecosystems and restoration of forests and landscapes. Focusing on the adoption of good practices by economic operators in order to minimize the impact of their interventions on forest resources and contributing to the promotion of forest and landscape restoration initiatives in the framework of AFR100 and Bonn Challenge will be your responsibilities.



You will maintain close working collaboration with government institutions, international environmental organization, private and civil society actors, and local communities to build and operationalize partnerships aimed at responsible management and restoration of degraded forests and lands.
In addition, you will contribute to the strengthening of the institutional capacities of key practitioners to improve their capacities in the use of tools for for conservation, sustainable management and restoration of forest resources and degraded lands.

Job Responsibilities

On behalf of WRI and under overall supervision and backstopping of the WRI DRC Country Manager you will perform the following:

Leadership

  • Provide technical support in favour of formalization and good governance of the artisanal logging, wood energy (charcoal and fuelwood) supply chain, and non-timber forest products (NTFP)
  • Ensure that local communities, pigmies, and leaders play key roles in all decision-making processes in relation to their forest lands, through monitoring and participation in major dialogue spaces
  • Provide active contribution to the process of land use reform in DRC and ensure that forest ecosystem integrity and local and pigmy communities’ rights and are respected and safeguarded
  • Develop tools to support conservation, sustainable management and restoration of forest ecosystem

 

Partnership building

  • Build and maintain an excellent working relationship with WRI partners (government institutions, civil society organisation and private sector) in order to collaboratively design and generate buy of conservation, management and integrated landscape restoration initiatives
  • Promote with the Government of DRC and strategic partners the policy of conservation, sustainable management and restoration in line with relevant governments sectorial strategies and programmers and WRI Strategy for Africa
  • Assist in identifying opportunities for WRI Program and project development for DRC in line with WRI Africa Strategy and relevant DRC government commitments and sectorial policies and strategies pertaining sustainable development goals, forest ecosystems, biodiversity, climate change, land use planning, food security, renewable energy, green economy, as well as Bonn Challenge/ AFR100

 

Capacity building

  • Work with WRI partners to identify training needs in the use of information tools
  • Training key actors on the use tools aiming conservation, sustainable management, and restoration of forest ecosystems and degraded lands
  • Conduct awareness-raising activities and training of stakeholders (e.g government, civil society, and other partners) for the use of the Interactive Forest Atlas of the DRC and other information tools produced by WRI and its partners
  • Monitor and evaluate training activities and collect information on their impact with focus to awareness-raising and effectiveness of beneficiaries

 

Administrative

  • Ensure the appropriate use of material and financial resources allocated to projects for which you are responsible
  • Produce all technical and financial reports under her/his control according to WRI donors’ standards and/or procedures
  • Actively contribute to fundraising for initiatives to implement WRI's Strategy for Africa in DRC, through the development of proposals to be submitted to donors
  • Where appropriate, supervise additional staff, consultants, and interns
  • Timely report to the WRI DRC Country Manager or her/his representative any challenges encountered during the implementation of her/his duties
  • Perform other duties as requested by the WRI DRC Country Manager

 

Job Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in environmental science, forestry, sustainable development, geography, social sciences, or other relevant discipline
  • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in programme/project planning, development, coordination, implementation, and evaluation
  • Proven ability to think holistically and build high impact strategies in complex environment while maintaining attention to details
  • Managerial experience in environmental and sustainable development and policy analysis
  • Demonstrated competence and experience in programming, planning, monitoring and quality assurance
  • Proactive in developing strategies to accomplish objectives and drive for change and improvement
  • Efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines, achieving results and highly motivated professionally especially when faced with difficult problems and challenges
  • Working experience in more than one country in Central Africa and knowledge of WRI system are desirable
  • Proven knowledge of DRC and Congo Basin forestry context and environment-related policies, international conventions, agreements and programmes as well as regional inter-government institutions (COMIFAC, ECCAS, CPGL, etc.)
  • Proven experience in building and maintain collaboration and partnerships with external partners including public, civil society and private sectors
  • Excellent writing, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Fluency in oral and written French and English is required
  • Knowledge of national languages (Lingala, Kikongo, Swahili and Tshiluba) constitutes an advantage
