The Incubator Fund for Clean Cooking in DRC aims to support companies to access knowledge, technologies and finance that can help them become increasingly profitable, reliable, viable and capable of providing innovative solutions to reduce wood energy consumption and boost local socio-economic development in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This new Fund was launched within the framework of the Energy Programme funded by CAFI through the DRC National REDD+ Fund and implemented by UNDP and UNCDF in DRC since 2019. In a country where wood energy is estimated to account for about 58% of forest degradation and 19% of deforestation over 2010-2030, the objective of the Programme is to reduce the pressure on forests through developing alternative energy sources to wood energy.

Biomass as cooking energy accounted for 93% of the country's energy balance in 2015, and less than 10% of the population on average had access to electricity in 2019. The private sector is a key player to reduce the preponderance of wood in the national energy mix and promote more efficient consumption through the widespread popularization of more energy-efficient cooking stoves.

The enterprises targeted by the Fund are those mainly involved in the production and distribution of clean cooking solutions in the DRC, i.e. cooking stoves (wood stoves, charcoal stoves, gas stoves, briquette stoves).
