The first month of the year and the PMU has already achieved some important results! In January alone, 12 suspects were arrested and transferred to court. Amongst these, three poachers and an ivory buyer were arrested during an operation in the Eastern Sector of the Park. We have also succeeded in removing two war weapons from circulating in these criminal networks. These encouraging results confirm that our ranger units are now, more than ever, capable of dealing with these threats and protecting the Park's extraordinary biodiversity, thanks in a large part to the investment of the PMU and its partners in their training and equipment.
These investments have also been made in the Park's infrastructures. With the completion of the rehabilitation work on the Park's aeronautical infrastructure - and in particular the Kabo aircraft hangar this month - the PMU now has two fully operational airstrips in the park periphery, allowing almost daily monitoring of forest clearings and rivers in the heart of the Park, as well as its access points.
Sadly, the park lost one of its long-standing team members at the start of the year. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Louis Niebouka, gorilla tracker at Mondika since 2006, who passed away on the 24th of January. We are all very saddened by the loss of our colleague and brother. The entire PMU team joins me in extending our deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
