Action to protect, sustainably manage and restore forests is an essential, viable pathway to 1.5 degrees.  Thus, actions to support the protection of the world's largest lung in terms of net positive carbon balance, its peatlands and other ecosystems, are essential to these efforts. Absorbing about 1.5 billion tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere each year, or 4% of global emissions each year, Central Africa remains one of the only regions in the world that absorbs more carbon than it emits.

This is the context of the COMIFAC Declaration of Commitment and the Glasgow COP26 joint Declaration of the Central Africa of the Congo Basin donors.

Join this discussion on Calls for a “Fair Deal” that addresses the protection, sustainable use, and good governance of the central African Forest ecosystems of the Congo basin by the riparian countries of COMIFAC in exchange for an adequate share of international climate and biodiversity funds.
