From 2 to 4 October 2024, the Agriculture, Livestock and Protected Areas in Chad conference was held at the Hôtel Amitié in N'Djamena. It was organised by the DESIRA-ACCEPT consortium partners - notably the Institut de Recherche en Elevage pour le Développement (IRED), the Plateforme Pastorale du Tchad (PPT) and the Centre de Coopération Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le Développement (CIRAD).
They were supported by professional producers' organisations and numerous technical and financial partners such as the EU, the GIZ, the French Embassy, the CBFP, the FAO, the APN, the WCS, CONCORDIS, the HD Centre, projects currently underway in Chad (PREPAS, PETRA) as well as research institutions (IRD, University of N'Djamena).
The theme of the conference was ‘Agriculture, pastoralism and protected areas: tensions and solutions for the future of rural areas in Central Africa and the Sahel’, and it brought together more than 175 resource persons from many countries in Central and West Africa, as well as from East Africa and Europe. The participants discussed 52 scientific papers, 14 posters and a thematic film entitled ‘The waters of discord’, which was screened as a curtain raiser on the evening of1 October. The event was also marked by the joint launch of a new regional ‘Borderlands’ project by Concordis and HD Centre, as well as the technical workshop for the Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP) blocks.
