Inclusive Conservation and Reliable Data: The CBFP at the Heart of the Target 3 Forum in Libreville

Ambassador Dr. Aurélie Flore Koumba Pambo, CBFP Co-Facilitator for Gabon, takes part in today's opening of the "Target 3 Knowledge Exchange Forum" in Libreville.

Libreville, June 30, 2025 – On the sidelines of the regional conference on environmental crime and human-wildlife conflict (July 10–11, 2025), the Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP) is actively supporting the Target 3 Knowledge Exchange Forum, which opens today at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Libreville.

Co-organized by UNEP-WCMC and WWF Gabon, with support from the Bezos Earth Fund, the event aims to strengthen the capacities of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, and the Republic of Congo in implementing Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF).

Ambassador Dr. Aurélie Flore Koumba Pambo, CBFP Co-Facilitator for Gabon, is attending the opening of the forum, which aligns closely with the Partnership’s mission: promoting coordinated, equitable, and data-driven approaches to biodiversity conservation in the Congo Basin.

Over five days, the forum program (pdf – 402 Ki) will focus on the following themes:

  • Day 1: Foundations of Target 3 and data on protected and conserved areas (PCAs)
  • Day 2: In-depth focus on other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs)
  • Day 3: Key thematic areas related to the implementation of Target 3
  • Day 4: Effectiveness and governance of PCAs, including inclusive conservation and equitable governance
  • Day 5: Prioritization of actions and next steps

Technical sessions, interregional dialogues, and South-South exchanges – including with Latin American countries – will enrich the discussions.

The goal of the forum is to strengthen monitoring systems, improve data quality, and promote inclusive approaches, particularly by recognizing the role of Indigenous Peoples and local communities.

The CBFP thus reaffirms its role as a regional platform for dialogue and cooperation, serving the sustainable conservation of the Congo Basin's ecosystems.
