Science-Policy Dialogue: Experts Gather in Libreville to Address Key Environmental Challenges in the Congo Basin

How can scientists and policymakers work more closely to tackle environmental challenges?

On the sidelines of the Regional Conference on Environmental Crime and Human-Wildlife Conflict, a science-policy dialogue session will bring together scientists and policymakers on July 9, 2025, from 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM, at the Radisson Blu Okoumé Palace Hotel in Libreville (Gabon).

This session aims to strengthen the interface between scientific knowledge and political decision-making by focusing on four key thematic areas essential to preserving the ecosystems of the Congo Basin:

  • Environmental Crime, with the participation of Professor Jean Semeki Ngabinzeke

  • Human-Wildlife Conflicts, presented by Professor Martin Tchamba

  • Health Impacts of Ecosystem Degradation, with contributions from Dr. Gilles Aurélien Boupana Mapeyi and Dr. Chimène Nze Nkoghe

  • Financing for Socio-Ecological Resilience, with Professor Baudouin Michel

In preparation for this session, a pre-meeting between scientific experts and policymakers is scheduled for July 8 at 4:30 PM, in the Franceville Room of the same hotel.

To ensure meaningful discussions and active participation, all attendees are strongly encouraged to read the briefing note prepared by e-Base Africa and RFICS, which summarizes the key points of the thematic report in under two pages. For those wishing to explore further, full versions of the report (in French and English) are also available.

This science-policy dialogue is expected to be a highlight of the conference, at a time when the region's environmental challenges call for evidence-based responses, intersectoral collaboration, and innovation.
