Building Bridges Between Science, Policy, Communities & Diplomacy for the Forests and Wetlands of the 3 Tropical Basins
COP30 which opens in Belém puts on the spotlight the tropical forests and wetlands of the Congo Basin, the Amazon, and Southeast Asia which play a vital role in regulating the global climate and preserving biodiversity. Ensuring their protection and sustainable management requires stronger coordination among scientific, political, diplomatic, and community actors.
On November 11 at COP30, the thematic day on Forests, Social Equity, and Well-being at the Forest Pavilion highlighted how forest landscapes, especially in the tropics, provide critical ecosystem services such as clean water, food security, and climate resilience.
The event “Building Bridges Between Science, Politics, Communities and Diplomacy for the Forests and Wetlands of the Three Tropical Basins” organized by the One Forest Vision (OFVi) Initiative in partnership with Expertise France and the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs (MEAE) and the support of the CBFP, aimed to strengthen synergies between the three tropical basins to promote shared and sustainable forest governance.
This session brought together high-level speakers, including:
- Barbara Pompili, French Ambassador for the Environment – MEAE;
- Jérémie Pellet, Chief Executive Officer, Expertise France;
- and scientific and institutional representatives from Congo, Brazil, and Papua New Guinea.
Together, the speakers explored pathways for enhanced science diplomacy based on co-construction, shared knowledge, and interregional cooperation.
