Cameroon: Groundnuts, a Heritage in Peril

In Cameroon, groundnuts an essential crop in the Mbam and Inoubou region are now under serious threat due to the effects of climate change. Rising heat and humidity are fueling the spread of weevils, small insects that destroy up to 90% of post-harvest stocks, endangering food security and seed quality.

Faced with this crisis, women farmers are turning to imported varieties, which are less appreciated locally, while prices continue to skyrocket. There are solutions thorough drying, ventilated storage, crop rotation, and the use of natural bio-insect repellents but without strong government support, this ancestral crop may disappear, taking with it a vital part of Cameroon’s culinary and rural heritage.
