From September 24 to 26, 2025, N’Djamena (Chad) will host the International Conference on Pastoral Transhumance, protected areas, peace and security, pastoral economy, and sustainable development.
This event is part of the implementation of the N’Djamena Declaration of January 25, 2019, on transhumance.
The PETRADEP Project, implemented by GIZ and leader of the CBFP West Geographical Bloc, supports the organization of the conference, which is held under the coordination of sub-regional organizations and co-facilitated by the PFBC.
Main Objectives
The conference aims to accelerate the implementation of existing policies on pastoral transhumance, taking into account issues related to protected areas, security, the pastoral economy, and sustainable development. Specifically, it will:
- Assess the progress of cross-border agreements and investment plans resulting from the N’Djamena Declaration.
- Identify obstacles to peaceful and sustainable transhumance.
- Share best practices and solutions to strengthen regional cooperation.
- Engage pastoral communities, policymakers, researchers, and media in constructive dialogue.
Why This Conference Matters
Pastoral transhumance is vital for rural economies and food security but faces increasing challenges due to conflicts, resource scarcity, and environmental pressures. This conference will provide a unique platform to harmonize policies, promote peace, and support sustainable development in the region.
Expected Outcomes
By the end of the event, participants expect to:
- Obtain concrete recommendations to improve transhumance policies.
- Identify areas requiring further research and data collection.
- Strengthen regional cooperation and experience-sharing among countries in the West Bloc and Central Africa.
This gathering represents a strategic opportunity to turn pastoral policies into concrete actions, promoting sustainable, peaceful, and community- and environment-friendly pastoralism.
