Cabinda, Angolo 14 to 16 April 2025.
In the setting of the implementation of its
, especially focused on strengthening dialogue and scientific cooperation, the French and Gabonese co-facilitation of the Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP) organises a scientific colloquium on Congo Basin forests.Supported by the Republic of Angola and the French embassy in Luanda, the event shall hold in Cabinda from 14 to 16 April 2025.
Held under the theme “preserve biodiversity and fight against deforestation”, the colloquium goes in-line with previous scientific works began during the 20th Meeting of Parties (MoP20) of the CBPF. It aims to build on existing knowledge and to promote an integrated and interdisciplinary approach to the sustainable management of tropical forest ecosystems of Central Africa.
A Platform for the Mobilisation and Pooling of Scientific Knowledge
The colloquium is a strategic step for the mobilisation of scientific and technical communities of the region in view of harmonising diagnosis, methodologies and follow-up tools of forest dynamics in the Congo Basin. It equally aims to reinforce cohesion between overriding research principles and policies, both regional and international.
Several operational objectives are in view during this colloquium, namely:
- Structuring a more efficient regional scientific cooperation around Congo Basin forests by encouraging synergies among universities, research centres and specialised institutions;
- Support the implementation of the Forest Vision via a more robust scientific linkage between African forest spaces;
- Prepare technical regional contributions to the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30) to be held in Balém (Brazil), where tropical forests will be the core of international discussions.
A multi-sectoral and transversal participation
The event shall gather a panel representative of actors involved in governance, research, finance and civil society: representatives of sectoral ministries (forests, agriculture, land tenure, economy), regional institutions like COMIFAC, ECCAS and CEMAC, technical and financial partners together with civil society organisations and private companies active in the forest sector.
The Cabinda colloquium aspires to become a reference in terms of scientific consultation on the sustainable conservation and management stakes of forest resources of the Congo Basin. Via a series of panels, thematic workshops and restitution sessions, the colloquium shall provide an ideal setting for the building of shared scientific solutions able to inspire global environmental negotiations and nurture national strategies of sustainable development.
