The Maï-Ndombe REDD+ Project: A successful example of conservation and sustainable development in DRC

During a side event at the head office of the United Nations in New York on May 7, 2025, the Maï-Ndombe Carbon project led by the ERA company in Congo was applauded as a successful example.  Since 2009, the REDD+ project covers 300 000 hectares and combines forest protection and the socio-economic development of local communities. It improves the living conditions of the Mai-Ndombe population while efficiently contributing to the fight against climate change via carbon credit sales.  Jean-Robert Bwagoy, manager of ERA Congo, highlighted the mutual benefits generated from this project by Congo’s government and local communities who witness infrastructural development of their infrastructure thanks to this sustainable conservation model.  This project serves as such as a practical response to environmental and socio-economic challenges while offering innovative solutions for a more sustainable future.

The side event organised today, May 7, at the United Nations’ head office, was the DRC’s opportunity to focus on the efforts towards protecting forests and promoting the socio-economic development of local communities and indigenous people.   In this line, the Maï-Ndombe Carbone project of the ERA Congo company, an affiliate of the WWC was presented to participants as a successful example in funding ecosystem services.

‘We work with local communities and are able to get good results. Forest and biodiversity protection is expected of us. In return, the communities expect development and improvement in their living conditions. That is what we have displayed here,’ explained Jean-Robert Bwagoy, managing director of ERA Congo.

Implemented since 2009, on about 300 thousand hectares, this project daily transforms recipient communities by conserving forest ecosystems for the sales of carbon credit.  An efficient response to the fight against climate change and the improvement of living conditions of the population.
