On Thursday, May 22, 2025, the first meeting of the ad hoc working group on the renewal of international commitments to the forests of the Congo Basin was held via videoconference. Co-chaired by the CBFP French and Gabonese Republics, this meeting marks the beginning of a collective effort in the lead-up to COP30, which will take place in Belém.
Discussions initiated the development of a future “Pact for the Forests of the Congo Basin”, intended to succeed the Congo Basin Pledge adopted at COP26. Several avenues were explored, including the drafting of a new political declaration and the creation of a strategic framework to strengthen governance and accountability.
Bi-monthly meetings are planned through July, with the first working session scheduled for June 4. The process aims to enhance the visibility of the Congo Basin in upcoming climate negotiations while promoting a coordinated and inclusive engagement among all stakeholders involved.
