Drought and Land Degradation: Panama at the Heart of International Negotiations

"Land is more than a material asset: it is the foundation of our lives, our cultures, and our future."

A Strategic Gathering for Land Resilience

From December 1 to 5, 2025, Panama City will host the 23rd session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (CRIC 23). This meeting will bring together representatives from 196 countries as well as the European Union to assess progress in combating desertification, land degradation, and drought, in line with the UNCCD objectives.

Discussions Focused on Land Challenges

Participants will address key topics such as:

  • Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN): monitoring countries’ voluntary commitments to achieve neutrality by 2030.
  • Drought resilience: strategies to strengthen communities’ capacity to cope with droughts and their impacts.
  • Land restoration and biodiversity conservation: initiatives to restore degraded ecosystems and protect biodiversity.

These discussions will highlight the critical role of sustainable land management in ensuring food security, economic stability, and environmental preservation.

Panama: A Model of Commitment

The session will also showcase Panama’s commitment to sustainable land management. The country will present its “Commitment for Nature”, aiming to achieve land degradation neutrality by 2030, identifying 31 priority areas that require special attention.

Looking Ahead

CRIC 23 will underscore the need for coordinated global action to address land degradation and drought challenges. The recommendations emerging from this session will provide a foundation for future negotiations and initiatives to enhance the resilience of lands and communities dependent on these vital resources.
