LSE Roundtable on Sustainable Forest Management in the Congo Basin: Towards a Fair Deal

On 28 May 2025, the London School of Economics (LSE) will host a high-level roundtable on the theme (pdf - 249 Ki): “Sustainable Forest Management in the Congo Basin: A Contribution to the Fair Deal Discussion.” This strategic event comes at a pivotal moment, just six months before the next UNFCCC COP in Brazil, as the international community focuses on the role of forests in the global ecological transition.

The Congo Basin, home to the world’s second-largest tropical rainforest, plays a vital role in climate regulation and biodiversity conservation. In light of urgent climate challenges and the economic ambitions of Central African countries, the meeting aims to redefine what “sustainability” truly means in the context of forest management in the region. The roundtable builds on the work of the Fair Deal Task Force, launched at COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh.

Distinguished speakers (pdf - 306 Ki) include Dr. Kanta Kumari Rigaud (World Bank), Dr. Ben Filewod (Canadian Forest Service), Dr. Jonas Ngouhouo-Poufoun (UCL), Professor Charles Palmer (LSE), Patrice Bigombe Logo (University of Yaoundé II), Stanislas Stephen Mouba (Ministry of Environment, Gabon), Denis Jean Sonwa (WRI-Africa), Declan Conway (Grantham Institute), and Dany Pokem (CBFP). Their diverse expertise will offer a multidimensional perspective—economic, ecological, and political.

The event will be structured around three thematic sessions, combining presentations and case studies. Its main goal is to generate concrete recommendations and to develop a policy brief that will inform the agenda leading up to the 2025 conference.
